State of Alabama v. Transgenders

The Alabama Senate House Committee on Health recently passed the “What is a Woman Act” SB79.

While State Senator April Weaver brought forth the bill, Alabama’s First Female Governor Kay Ivey indicated her excitement to ratify it.

Taking effect October 1, 2025, the bill will codify terms of what it means to be Man and Woman, Father and Mother, boy and girl, and male and female based on a person’s biological sex at birth.

This bill is a first-of-its-kind and will certainly have reverberating effects within the southern United States. It officially abolishes legal conveniences for people identifying as trans or transgender.

While some believe Senate Bill 79 is a necessary remedy to Obama’s Change Campaign (2008-2016), some see this bill as a challenge to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which gave equal opportunities and protections for individuals and groups.
