LeFlore High School Celebrates Red Ribbon Week with Engaging Events

MOBILE, AL – The Mobile County Public School System observed Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 23–31, 2025, promoting drug-free and anti-bullying awareness. At John L. LeFlore High School, the campaign stood out through a five-day series of student-driven events focused on leadership, respect, and positive peer influence.

Founded in 1985, Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention awareness campaign. Its powerful origin began as a tribute to Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, a highly decorated DEA agent who was tragically murdered by drug traffickers that year. In response to his sacrifice, Kiki’s friends and neighbors in his hometown began wearing red ribbons to honor his commitment and pledge to live drug-free lives. The movement quickly grew from a local tribute into a national effort, inspiring millions of Americans to wear a red ribbon as a symbol of their dedication to a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

LeFlore’s observance featured a dynamic and interactive schedule designed to deepen the students’ engagement. The week included themed dress days, peer mentoring sessions, and classroom discussions focused on student leadership and healthy decision-making. LeFlore’s full-week program reflected MCPSS’s broader goal of nurturing engaged and responsible young leaders. The school emphasized the power of unity and positive decision-making, turning awareness into action.

The week highlighted the power of collaboration among students, educators, and community partners, showing how positivity, when amplified, can become its own form of prevention against negative influences.
